Rev. Robert “Norman” Pickett passed away on Christmas Day, 2013. He pastored Bethel UB church (Elmore, Ohio) 2006-2012. After retiring, he and his wife, Cindy, moved to North Carolina, where he died of melanoma cancer. Cindy reports that plans are being made for a memorial service at Mainstreet UB church in Walbridge, Ohio.

Doug Stull (right), senior pastor of Shepherd of the Valley UB church (Logan, Ohio), informed us of the death of his mother. Lillian Stull Hudson passed away on November 17. She lived in Glencoe, Ohio. The funeral was held November 20.

We received word that the mother of Gary Gates (right) passed away Saturday, November 16. Visitation is Tuesday, November 19, and the funeral is on Wednesday, November 20. The funeral will be held in Carlinville, Ill.

Gertha G. (Stephens) Evans, 86 of Huntington, Ind., passed away November 13. She was the mother of Rev. Ron Evans, pastor of the UB church in Kunkle, Ohio.

Gertha’s late husband, Don, was known to several generations of Huntington University students for his work with the university maintenance department. He passed away in 1994.

Both the visitation and funeral will be held Saturday, November 16.

Rev. Richard LePage, 68, a former United Brethren pastor, passed away November 5, 2013, at his home in Rockford, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Roberta, and two children.

Robert Bryan Rawley, Sr., 87, passed away Saturday, August 31, at his home in Mt. Solon, Va. He was a member of Mt. Olivet UB church in Mt. Solon. He is survived by his wife, Martha, and four children. Two of those children are well-known to the United Brethren family:

  • Rev. David Rawley, pastor of Otterbein UB church in Greencastle, Pa.
  • Fonda Cassidy, a member of Mt. Olivet who, along with husband Robert, has led the UB Honduras summer medical team for a number of years.

In addition, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Cherry, wife of longtime UB minister Harold Cherry.

Pauline R. Stephens-Hall, 96, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away Thursday, August 8, 2013. She was an ordained minister in the United Brethren church, serving as a pastor for 31 years and associate pastor for 5 years. She retired in 1979.

Pauline and her husband, Dale, were married in 1941 and had two children. Dave Stephens, is an ordained United Brethren minister who is director of Camp Cotubic in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Her daughter, Dalene, preceded her in death. Dale passed away in 1985.

United Brethren ministers Kenneth Graham and Roger Overmyer will officiate at the funeral.

Funeral time: 12 pm Monday, August 12, 2013. Viewing one hour before the service.
Funeral location: Eichholtz Funeral Home, 321 N. Main St., Bellefontaine, Ohio.

Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Wayne, Ohio, at a later date.

Ruth Benner, a former United Brethren missionary in Sierra Leone, passed away quietly just after 8 am on August 1, 2013.  She had been struggling with cancer for several months.

Visitation: Tuesday, August 6, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.
Funeral: 11 am Wednesday, August 7, 2013.

Ruth served two terms in Sierra Leone. From 1965-1968, she served at the Bumpe Girls’ School–a teacher the first year, and later principal and teacher. From 1969-1972, her work was divided between Minnie Mull School at Bonthe and Mattru. She also became Associate Secretary of Christian Education for the conference, a role in which she traveled to various places to conduct courses for both teachers and students. Her work also involved Christian Endeavor and helping with Vacation Bible School in nearby villages.

After returning from the field, Ruth remained involved in UB mission work at her own church, and also in denominational roles with the Women’s Missionary Fellowship and the Global Ministries Leadership Team.

Arrangements have not yet been completed, but will be passed along when they are finalized. Please pray for all who loved Ruth, and especially her cousin and housemate for many years, Carol Coopman. She can be reached as follows:

Jill Van Deusen (right), 70, a former missionary in Sierra Leone, passed away on Thursday, May 23, at the University of Toledo Medical Center.

Jill, a native of Hillsdale, Mich., served as a teacher in Sierra Leone for nine years. After returning from Sierra Leone, she worked two years in Washington DC with Angel Tree Prison Fellowship, and then moved to Archbold, Ohio, where she taught school at Four County Career Center, near Archbold, and also worked at the Archbold Library. She was a member of the Archbold Evangelical Church.

Both the visitation and funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 28, at Archbold Evangelical Church, 705 Lafayette Street, Archbold, Ohio 43502.

Jill Van Deusen almost died in Africa. One morning in August 1979, Jill woke up almost completely paralyzed. Her condition was quickly diagnosed as Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a rare disease of the spinal cord. She was quickly evacuated to the Netherlands, accompanied by Dr. Ron Baker and Sharon Birdsall (now Sharon Cherry). She gradually recovered, and returned to the United States on October 3, 1979. Jill later bravely returned to Sierra Leone to continue serving, but her body just couldn’t handle it, and her term was cut short.
