Ed Mast passed into eternity Monday morning, June 22, in Arizona, where he and his wife, Mary, had lived since the early 1970s. He is survived by his wife Mary, children Sandi McMahon, Sue Copp and Randy Mast, plus a number of grandchildren and at lest one grandchild.

Ed Mast pastored the UB church in Glendale, Calif., for many years. In the mid-1970s, he moved to Fountain Hills, Ariz., where he started what is now Fountain Hills Community Church.

Richard Palmer, pastor of the Abilene UB church (Abilene, Kansas) since 2001, passed away Sunday night, May 3. He suffered a major stroke on April 10 and has been in poorhealth ever since. He leaves behind Carmen, his wife of 55 years.

Ernie Herndon, Sr., Associate Pastor of Olivet UB (Dayton, Ohio), passed away Sunday, February 1.

Vewing: Thursday, February 5, from 5-8 p.m.

Rev. Herndon was born May 8, 1924, in Somerset, Va. He was a World War II vet, serving in the Army 1943-1946. Over the years he worked as a farmer, a self-employed carpenter, and in private security. He is survived by his wife, Carol J. (McKee) Herndon, whom he married January 6, 1968; and by six children.

Norma Tinker, a longtime UB member and trustee of Huntington University, passed away January 5 at Swiss Village in Berne, Ind. She is the mother of Pat Bergdall, wife of Huntington University professor Dr. Chaney Bergdall.

Visitation: Thursday, January 8, 4-7 p.m., and 1 hour before the funeral service.

Marie Mellott passed away Sunday evening, November 23. She was the widow of Rev. O. Guy Mellott, who pastored the Heidlersburg UB church (Heidlersburg, Pa.) for over 20 years. For a short time, both Marie and Guy pastored the Mt. Olivet UB church in Aspers, Pa.

Melvena M. Hirschy, 92, the mother of Bishop Emeritus Paul Hirschy, passed away Tuesday, November 11, in Berne, Ind. She was a member of the Monroe UB church in Monroe, Ind.

Laurence Smith, father of Stephen Smith, senior pastor of Lake View Church (Camden, Mich.), passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2008. At the time of his death, Mr. Smith was living in Pennsylvania. Memorial services will be held:

  • September 27, 11 a.m., in Winston-Salem, N.C.
  • October 3, 11 a.m., in Midland, Mich.

Ruth Boggs, the mother of Laurel Mission director Titus Boggs, passed away Tuesday, August 26. Ruth’s late husband, Alvin, served on staff with Laurel Mission in the 1950s, and later started a school near the mission.

Archie Kent, 94, a retired UB minister from Rugby UB church (Hope, Ind.) passed away on Wednesday, August 14. He served United Brethren churches in Anderson, Alexandria, Rugby, Huntington, Warren, New Castle and Williamsport, Ind., and Sherkston, Canada. He also had been an accountant with Canadian Fairbanks-Morris Co. in Canada.The arrangements are:

He is survived by his wife, Lillian, whom he married in 1938. There are also six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

The ladies of the Rugby church plan to serve a dinner following the burial service. Memorial contributions may be given to Rugby UB church.

Ruby Cherry passed away Saturday, August 9. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 13, at Eden UB church (Mason, Mich.). Visitation will be at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, 900 Michigan Ave., Lansing, Mich., at these times:

  • 1-3 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, August 12.,
  • 9-10 a.m. Wedneday, August 13.

Ruby was the wife of longtime UB minister Harold Cherry, and the mother of Kevin Cherry, currently pastor of Heart O’ the Lakes UB in Brooklyn, Mich. Rev. Milan Maybee will officiate at the funeral.
