Goldie Saultman, wife of Pastor Erv Saultman, passed away on the evening of Saturday, May 11, 2013.

Erv and Goldie served the Mt. Morris church as it was “daughtered” by the Richfield Road Church in Flint, MI. They also toured the area holding gospel music concerts in many of the United Brethren churches.

Elmer Etling Jr. lost his fight with cancer on Monday, April 22, 2013. He was the father of George Etling, who in May 2012 became senior pastor of Fifth Street UB church in Staunton, Va.

Charles F. Malson, Sr., a retired United Brethren minister, passed away at 8:35 pm on March 3, 2013. Funeral arrangements are as follows:

Charles was called to the ministry while making his living as a chicken farmer in Hillsdale County, Michigan, and serving as a volunteer with Youth for Christ. He headed to Houghton College in New York before returning to pastor Brown Corners United Brethren Church in Clare, Mich., from 1952-1957. In 1957, while serving as pastor/superintendent, Charles started a United Brethren Church on Richfield Road in Flint, Mich. He was elected as fulltime Michigan Conference superintendent in 1981. At that time, he and Doris moved to Carson City, Mich. He retired from that role in 1991. Charles also served as chaplain and as a volunteer at Carson City Hospital for a total of 25 years.

Charles was a life-long learner, taking classes and seminars throughout life. He received his Masters from Huntington University in 1987.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Doris; his six kids and their spouses; 19 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Willard Sanders (right), 96, a retired United Brethren minister, passed away February 22 at Swiss Village Retirement Community in Berne, Ind.

Burial will follow the funeral at the Sherwood Cemetery in Sherwood, Ohio, at 2 pm.

Rev. Sanders was born in Farmer, Ohio, and worked as a truck driver until age 33, when he answered the call to the ministry. He graduated from Huntington College (Huntington, Ind.) and went on to pastor the UB churches in Corunna, Ind.; Hudson, Ind.; and Hillsdale, Mich. He was ordained in 1958. He also served as a conference superintendent.

Rev. Sanders and his wife, Rachel, were married in 1939 and moved to Swiss Village in 2004. Rachel passed away in 2010. He is survived by two daughters, two sons, 20 grandchildren, and several great- and -great-great grandchildren.

Memorials shuld be made to the Swiss Village Samaritan Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Chester Hirschy, a retired United Brethren minister, passed away December 27, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Myona, and his three children.

Hirschy pastored three United Brethren churches, and also served as chaplain with Market Place Ministries. A funeral notice appeared in the Orlando Sentinel.

We just received notice of the death of Rev. David Flick, a former UB pastor, on July 12, 2012. He succumbed to lymphoma cancer at age 56. Flick graduated from Huntington University in 1986 and went on to pastor the Franklin UB church (Franklin, Pa.), and the UB churches in Alpena and DeWitt, Mich. His brothers Tim and Steve, likewise, were former United Brethren ministers. Since 1994, David Flick and his wife of 37 years, Beverly, had lived in Alpena. He also left behind a son and a daughter. The funeral was held in Alpena on July 16, 2012.

Betty L. Schwenk passed away Monday, November 5, 2012. She was the mother of Pat Schwenk, senior pastor of New Hope Community Church (Bryan, Ohio). The funeral was held Saturday, November 10, at Lakewood Park Baptist Church in Auburn, Ind.

Scott and Tanya Hardaway

Tanya Hardaway, 38, passed away on Monday, October 29. As reported on October 15, she had been diagnosed with uterine sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Tanya is the wife of Scott Hardaway, senior pastor since 2001 of Pathway Community Church in Jackson, Mich.

James E. Reiber (right), 74, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Born in New Castle, Pa., he worked as a Fixed Wing and Helicopter Mechanic in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1978. He married Karen Sue Cassidy in 1972, and she passed away in 2009.

Reiber was ordained as a United Brethren minister in 1997, when he was pastoring Mill Chapel UB church in Reedsville, W. Va. At the time of his death, he was a member of Union Chapel United Brethren church in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Surviving are five children, including son Gary, who is senior pastor of Union Chapel UB church in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Mary Mentzer, 94, passed away January 31, 2012, at a nursing home in Carlisle, Pa. She was the wife of Rev. Fred Mentzer, who passed away in 1979; and the mother of Rev. Robert Mentzer, a retired UB minister. Funeral services were held February 3, 2012 in Chambersburg, Pa., with Rev Murray Stevens, senior pastor of St. James UB church (Chambersburg) officiating.
