Burley Clay, 88, a retired United Brethren minister, passed away September 10, 2010. He was a pastor for 58 years–48 in the Missionary Church, and 10 in the United Brethren church. He pastored the Alvordton, Ohio, and Waldron, Mich., UB churches during the 1980s. Prior to that, they served non-UB churches in Arizona and California.

Burley Clay is the father of Polly Dunten, whose husband, Darwin, is pastor of Findlay First United Brethren Church, Findlay, Ohio.

Dean Hoffman passed away July 19 at 11:25 pm at York Hospital, York, Pa. It was very peaceful. Over the years, Dean had been very active in United Brethren camping and other ministries.

Virginia (Royse) Blaine, 92, passed away at 3:17 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. She was the wife and companion in ministry since 1944 (66 years) of Rev. Robert Blaine, a longtime pastor in the United Brethren church.

The Blaines and their two children and families all live in Greenfield, Ohio.

Virginia was a member of the United Brethren Church in Greenfield for over 70 years. She had been attending Anchor Baptist Church in Washington Court House.

Elizabeth Lydia Grace Hunt, 81, of Ithaca, Mich., passed away Wednesday, June 30. She was the widow of Rev. William Hunt, a former United Brethren minister.

Elizabeth married William Hunt in Sunfield, Mich., on December 23, 1957. Bill passed away in 2008. Elizabeth retired from teaching in the Ithaca Public Schools in 1985 after 30 years. She was a singing evangelist for 5 years in the United Brethren Church in 1952.

Paul Webster, 58, passed away in his sleep Tuesday morning, May 25. He was currently serving as senior pastor of two churches:

  • Munson UB (Morenci, Mich.).
  • Alvordton UB (Alvordton, Ohio).

He had served the Munson church since 2000, and Alvordton since 2005.

Paul leaves behind his wife, Rita, and four children.

Karyn Marie Mohr, 59, passed away Sunday morning, May 23, in Sault St. Marie, Mich. She was the wife of Rev. Lionel “Lon” Mohr, an ordained United Brethren minister.

The Mohrs had been married since 1969, and have two children: Michael (currently stationed in the Persian Gulf), and Heath. There are five grandchildren.

Barbara Osgood passed away Sunday evening, April 25, 2010, at home surrounded by family and friends. She was a retired nurse, a former missionary to Sierra Leone, and a lifelong member of McCallum United Brethren church (Delton, Mich.).

Mrs. Lillian Iris Kent, 92, widow of the Rev. Archie Kent, passed away Saturday morning, March 27, 2010, at the Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, Ind. She was a member of the Rugby United Brethren church in Hope, Ind.

The Kents served Indiana congregations in Anderson, Alexandria, Rugby, Huntington, Warren, New Castle, and Williamsport, as well as in Sherkston, Ontario. Lillian was born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1918.

Both visitation and the funeral will be held at the Norman Funeral Home in Hope. It is located on the southwest corner of the town square on State Road 9.

Sylvester Martin, 90, passed away Friday, February 19, in Decatur, Ind. He pastored a number of United Brethren churches during his career in the ministry, stretching back to 1940.

1946-1951: Zanesville, Ind. (his home church)
1951-1958: Park UB, Bluffton, Ind.
1958-1961: Cincinnati, Ohio.
1961-1984: First UB, Decatur, Ind.

Sylvester and his wife, Marcile, retired in 1984. He is survived by Marcile, who lives in Decatur, 2 sons, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Dave is known for his work with youth over the years:

  • Leader of the “Children of Faith” group at College Park UB in Huntington, Ind.
  • Denominational Youth Director 1966-1973, and led the UB youth conventions.
  • Executive Director of Christian Endeavor International 1979-1998.
  • Executive Director of World’s Christian Endeavor Union 1984-2006.

In addition, Dave worked as Dean of Men at Huntington University (1963-1966) and as Office Administrator/Treasurer for the denomination (1973-1979).
