Dave Stephens Diagnosed with Cancer

Dave Stephens reports that he has esophagus cancer. Dave, an ordained United Brethren minister since 1969, is director of Camp Cotubic in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Camp Cotubic was started by the former Central Conference in the 1970s.

On November 18, Dave said on Facebook, “We went to the Ohio State University cancer center today to begin the process. Ill have more tests next week to determine the stage etc., then we will probably have 5 weeks of radiation and chemo. It is likely then that surgery will take place to remove that section.

“Our faith remains strong. I have recovered well from the heart surgery”– he had a heart attack in June, followed by quadruple bypass surgery–“so I’m healthy enough for the next step. Thank you all for your friendship and prayers.”

Dave plans to retire on January 1, 2014.

Prayers going out to your and your family during this time. My boyfriend was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in July of 2013, went through 5 weeks of chemo and radiation, and hit some bumps along the way, one requiring a colon resection surgery. He’s now 5 weeks post op from that surgery, and we’re awaiting the surgery date for the cancer. It’s a bumpy road, filled with so many doctor visits I can’t even count. But we’ve been blessed with an incredible support team of friends and family that are always checking up on him, and encouraging us along the way. If ever I can answer any questions or be a listening ear, let me know. I know what it’s like, still going through it.

Dave, You are in our prayers. Our entire church will be praying for you. I appreciate your life and ministry and know that your faith is strong. However, if you are not healed it will not be because we did not ask. May God grant you a special presence and peace as well as healing.
