We received word that Rev. Herbert (“Herb”) Cherry passed away Thursday night, March 24, 2011. He was an ordained minister and former pastor in the United Brethren church, and the brother of fellow UB ministers Harold and Howard Cherry. The funeral is set for Thursday, March 31st, at Eden UB church in Mason, Mich.

  • Visitation – Wednesday, March 30th, 5-8 pm at Chas. J. Burden & Son Funeral Home, 1806 E Michigan Avenue, Jackson, MI 49202
  • Funeral – Thursday, March 31st, 11 am at Eden UB Church, 1938 Eden Road, Mason, Michigan 48854, with visitation one hour prior.

Rev. Robert Sanders, 82, of Reedsville, Ohio, passed away Saturday evening, March 19. He had pastored UB churches in southern Ohio since 1955–Mt. Zion, Salem Chapel, Laurel Chapel, West Pleasant Hill, Liberty, Logan, and Mt. Hermon. He concluded his ministry with 23 years as senior pastor of Mt. Hermon UB of Pomeroy, Ohio, 1980 to 2003.

Rev. Sanders served in the Army-Air Force in the Philippines 1946-1947. He also taught school for 30 years. Rev. Sanders was ordained in 1973.

Rev. Sanders is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nina, three daughters, and one son.

Funeral: 1 pm Wednesday, March 23, 2011. Rev. Peter Martindale will officiate.
Visitation: 5-8 pm Tuesday, March 22.

Brad Kittle (right) has been appointed senior pastor of Praise Point UB (Willshire, Ohio), effective April 1, 2011. He had been senior pastor of The Rock, a UB church in Findlay, Ohio (originally called Faith Community), since 2008. Kittle replaces Mark Rutledge, who had served as senior pastor of Praise Point since January 2006. A special retirement service was held for Rutledge on March 27, 2011.

Praise Point was formed in January 2003 when two UB churches, Zion and Willshire, merged. They sold their previous buildings and constructed a brand new facility in a prominent location in Willshire. That building was dedicated in September 2006.

LivingstonDaily.com published a mini-profile on Mark Wilson, who became senior pastor of Fowlerville UB (Fowlerville, Mich.) in May 2010. He is new to the United Brethren denomination, having previously served as family pastor at Kentwood Community Church in the Grand Rapids, Mich., area.

Mark and Angela Vincenti and family

Mark Vincenti is the new youth pastor at College Park Church in Huntington, Ind. He joined the staff February 1. Mark has spent the past ten years serving as youth pastor at King Street United Brethren Church (Chambersburg, Pa.).

Mark served as a youth ministry intern at College Park while attending Huntington University over 10 years ago. While at HU, Mark met Angela McNew and soon realized that he had met his future wife. He and Angela have three girls: Kiana (7) Naomi (4), and Asha (2).

The announcement from College Park says, “Mark is a very gifted youth leader but also comes with a passion for the local church. Mark has often said that College Park holds a special place in his heart because of his ministry experience here, meeting Angela, and the fact that this is where God called him into ministry. We are excited to have Mark and Angela come and look forward to the church getting to know them more.”

Roger Vezeau (right), the current Associate Pastor of Youth and Young Adults, and Mark will work together in the leadership of the youth ministry through the end of May. At that time, Roger will hand off the leadership reigns of the youth ministry and Mark will considered the lead youth pastor.

“Roger will be stepping into leadership of several other areas of ministry that will help College Park grow. Some of the new areas of responsibility will include developing our men’s ministry more thoroughly, and helping the men’s ministry work more closely with the women’s ministry to develop a marriage enrichment ministry. Roger will also be asked to continue in his role in the collaborative work for youth ministry and the church overall. And finally, Roger will give a portion of his time to assisting Mark in the ministry to parents of youth, large group events, mission trips, and contributing as a teacher/speaker when needed.”

Gerry Gallaway, pastor of McCallum UB (Delton, Mich.), underwent a heart catheterization this morning (Feb 23) in Grand Rapids, Mich. Sally Hock-Harrison, a layperson from the church, reports that he did well. “They put in one stent and are sending him home in a while, possibly later today.”

Rev. Fred A. Miller, 87, passed away February 10, 2011. He served as a pastor for 45 years, including the UB churches in Modesto, Calif., and Philomath, Ore. He then worked 23 years with Oregon Nursing Home Ministries.

Fred is survived by his wife, Jane, whom he married in 1943. They had five children.

The funeral was held February 18 at Siskiyou Perl Chapel in Medford, Oregon, where he lived.

Anthony L. Blair, an ordained UB minister, has been named President of Evangelical Theological Seminary in Myerstown, Pa. He was selected by a unanimous vote of the seminary’s board of trustees, and will take office July 1.

Blair, 46, is co-senior pastor of a non-denominational church called Hosanna! A Fellowship of Christians, and teaches in the master’s and Ph.D. programs at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa., where he’s been on the faculty since 1997. In addition, Blair has taught church history at Evangelical Theological Seminary since 2009.

Blair has been a pastor, church planter, and superintendent in the former Mid-Atlantic Conference. He pastored these UB churches in Pennsylvania:

  • 1986-1989: Lurgan UB (Lurgan, Pa.)
  • 1989-1991: Macedonia UB (Greencastle, Pa.)
  • 1991-1994: Devonshire UB (Harrisburg, Pa.)
  • 1994-2000: Strinestown UB (Strinestown, Pa.).
  • 2000-2005: Grace Now! Ministries (Middletown, Pa.)

Blair holds a bachelor’s in religion from Messiah College; a master’s in religion from Evangelical Theological Seminary; a doctorate in history from Temple University; and a Doctor of Ministry from George Fox Theological Seminary.

He and his wife of 22 years, Carol, have two daughters.

Evangelical School of Theology has 185-190 students pursuing graduate degrees. Two other UB ministers, Ray Seilhamer and Kirby Keller, previously served as EST’s president.

Nick Woodall, pastor of Stryker UB Church (Stryker, Ohio), has experienced the loss of his father. Robert A. Woodall passed away Thursday, February 3, 2011, at age 82.
