Knowing that we claim Francis Scott Key as United Brethren, and seeing that news sites today state he personally owned slaves, I've been perplexed. Wikipedia says:

"The United Brethren took a strong stand against slavery, beginning around 1820. After 1837, slave owners were no longer allowed to remain as members of the United Brethren Church."

If that is correct, it would explain how Key could be UB and a slaveholder. But were we really "firmly abolitionist" from the beginning, or were we firmly abolitionist from about 1820 onward?

And has anyone addressed this "Key" contradiction in writing?
